My Story

Sanne Rodenstein joined Making Waves Foundation earlier this year, bringing with her a deep passion for sailing and a genuine commitment to inclusion. Based in Melbourne, Sanne began sailing just four years ago, yet in that short time has developed a profound respect for the ocean, offshore sailing, and the powerful role that teamwork plays on and off the water.

In 2025, Sanne will take part in the Rolex Sydney to Hobart Yacht Race as part of the Making Waves Foundation campaign — widely regarded as one of the most demanding offshore races in the world. Often described as the “Mount Everest of sailing,” the race is a formidable challenge even for the most experienced sailors.

What makes the Making Waves Sydney to Hobart campaign truly unique is its commitment to inclusion, with 50% sailors with disability and 50% able-bodied sailors racing together as one team. For Sanne, being part of such an experienced and diverse crew is both inspiring and humbling. She sees this campaign as an opportunity to challenge herself, grow, and support others while operating in a space that prioritises safety, learning, and respect for the elements.

Sanne’s personal goals for the campaign are grounded in teamwork and wellbeing — to support her fellow crew members wherever needed, to learn as much as possible in a short period of time, and to arrive in Hobart happy, healthy, and stronger for the experience. While the unknowns of offshore sailing present a real challenge, Sanne embraces this as part of the journey and an opportunity to build resilience and patience.

Through her involvement with Making Waves, Sanne has been deeply inspired by participants who are new to sailing, particularly young people overcoming fear and daily challenges to step confidently into unfamiliar environments. These experiences have shaped her belief that inclusion is driven by action — by ensuring people feel they belong in spaces that are not always designed with everyone in mind.

By supporting Sanne’s fundraising, donors are backing more than a race. They are helping Making Waves Foundation continue its mission to provide life-changing sailing experiences, build confidence, and demonstrate what is possible when opportunity and inclusion come together on the water.
